Be our first Warren Public Library intern! 

Warren Public Library has been surging with the number of successful programs over the last year.  To keep up with the new demands on staff time and resources, and invest back into the next generation, we are interested in hiring a teen intern.

We are looking for someone who loves stories and information in all its various forms.  From print to audio to electronic to graphic novels, there are community requests for every kind of format.  We also want someone who will help us craft the library into a thriving community space for all ages.  We need someone who can help a child find their new favorite picture book, help students with research, and adults with local events.

 

Hours and Pay:

10-12 hours a week at Indiana’s minimum wage of $7.25 an hour

Work hours will be 4PM-6PM, Wednesdays we are open until 8PM

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Circulation Desk Operations (The day to day stuff):

  • Sign up patrons for new library cards
  • Check books in and out
  • Greet and assist patrons with questions and requests
  • Reshelve returned materials
  • Process fines and fees
  • Help patrons find library materials and place holds
  • Assist with copies, faxing, and scanning
  • Prepare, pack, and unpack holds transits

Patron Engagement (The fun stuff!):

  • Chat with patrons about their reading adventures and discover what makes them tick
  • Play book matchmaker – recommend titles and suggest similar reads
  • Be our library cheerleader – promote awesome events and programming
  • Jump into programming offerings (crafting afternoons, book clubs, and more!)
  • Connect with kids, teens, adults, and those of retirement age
  • Help brainstorm and implement programming for all ages, with a special focus on getting teens excited about reading

Shared Staff Duties:

  • Keep our space welcoming and tidy (we’re all in this together!)
  • Help create fun social media content
  • Maintain a welcoming library atmosphere
  • Help weed old books out of the library.
  • Other tasks as assigned (We are one of the smallest libraries in Indiana, we all wear many hats during the day)

 

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled high school student: public, private, or homeschooled
  • 16-18 years of age
  • Able to commit to one year of internship for the 2025-26 school year
  • Willing to complete internship learning projects for the library, which may include:
    • Selecting, ordering, unboxing, and processing a small book order from start to finish
    • Multiple networking interviews with organization heads in the Warren community
    • Design, budget for, advertise, and lead a one-off program
    • ASSIST WITH SUMMER READING PREPARATIONS

 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Must be an avid reader (any format – print, digital, or audio!)
  • Casual knowledge of current book culture, trends, and popular titles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with patrons over the phone and in person
  • Positive, energetic, and flexible attitude
  • Pleasant and friendly personality
  • Comfortable with computers and other technology
  • Ability to multitask and complete assigned tasks with multiple interruptions
  • Ability to stay on feet for 2 or more hours, lift/move heavy objects
  • Ability to learn policies and procedures for circulation of books and processing of fees
  • Ability to serve patrons regardless of identity, origin, ability, religion, race, culture, socioeconomic status, age, sexual orientation, or other differences
  • Handy with a glue stick – cut, paste, and create the displays and special projects as needed
